$%*# toe!

In June, my daughter crashed into me while wearing cleats and ripped off half my toenail. I refrained from fainting, and did a post wondering why my vasovagal syndrome is so much more profound when I hurt a toe than when I hurt any other part of me. Today, I got a chance to prove once again that my toes are my Achilles heel when my son crashed into me while wearing his roller shoes and ripped off half of the same toenail. Bigger injury, more blood, and much more serious effort on my part to faint. Again, the pain was nothing extraordinary; it was just that toe thing. Go figure!

YOW!!! That has GOT to hurt! My prayers for your complete and rapid recovery are going out now!
As for the vasovagal syncope, I had no idea this had a name. I experienced it a year ago when a neighbor’s dog nipped me. It didn’t even break skin or draw blood, but I immediately felt faint and had to sit on the ground (I was outside talking over the fence with the neighbor) and duck my head between my knees. My neighbor, of course, was frantic and wanted to call 911, but I wouldn’t let her get her dog into trouble– they would have had to report a dog bite, and I know the dog isn’t dangerous, as she’s big enough to rip my arm off if she wanted to… she was just irritated with me for some reason. I think the cause of my reaction was shock… surprise that the dog nipped me. I know that my blood pressure dropped through the floor.
Perhaps it is time to wear something to protect those toes, like sneakers perhaps? I have never had a nail get crushed or ripped off before, so I can’t attest to whether the pain is ordinary or extra-ordinary. Different injuries have different pain signatures I’ve realized. Bludgeoning, cuts, muscle injury, ligament injury, arterial shock, knee hit, shin bone hit. They all have a significant signature. Those injuries I have never experienced, like bone breaking, I cannot compare to the others in terms of level or what not.
Btw, don’t go into shock. Use those breathing exercises.
