I saw &lt;i&gt;Airport&lt;/i&gt; during its original theatrical release, and actually, those "cliches" were new and original at the time.  It is a tribute to &lt;i&gt;Airport's&lt;/i&gt; value as a genre pathfinder that so many comments and situation in the film were picked up in subsequent films.

And &lt;i&gt;Airplane&lt;/i&gt;... what a film!  It is a spot-on satire of the entire genre :D.  The only other film that even comes close to this achievement is Mel Brooks' &lt;i&gt;Spaceballs&lt;/i&gt;, which totally zapped the mid-seventies space adventure films, especially &lt;i&gt;Star Wars&lt;/i&gt; :D.</description>
