Israel has no choice but to fight. Unlike their enemies, Israelis are not suicidal and they know what is instore for them if they lose.

It's not about faith, it's about limits.

When a person or nation meets their limits, they can do nothing else. Not without the will to do. The only question of worth is whether Israel has the will.

I recall that, during the 1973 Yom Kippur war, there was a time when the bien pensants felt that Israel was truly doomed as well. Yet, Israelis pulled the hat trick and vanquished their enemies (hardened soldiers, all) brilliantly. Oh, ye of little faith!

I don't believe for a second that Israel is just going to lie down and die. People have been predicting its demise ever since its founding, and guess what? They ain't been right yet.

Israel may not have that extra year to do whatever with, because Iran will move between now and 2 years when Bush will be out of office. Iran cannot afford to wait until the next US Presidency simply because new US Presidents are unpredictable, because Bush is predictable Iran has a better chance manipulating the field. Or Iran could move during the transition, when the new President will not have his government setup. This is what I would do if I was in Iran's shoes.

The combat troops Isral fielded had no real experence with hardened fighters, they have made it clear that they are no match for hezbollah, without air power, the terror unleached on the civillain population they would have lost their state to the arabs. the isralies perfer unarmed targets, apartment buildings, cars with famlies trying to flee the carnage, the news today said they lost 11 tanks, that is a real blow if it is true. It is time to rethink our relationship with this religous state.

Dafydd has a different take at BigLizards. It's less defeatist.

I'll be interested to see what the bigger picture seems to reveal in the next few days. I've not seen VDHanson's look at the ramifications, for one. For instance, if these forces fail, would the US sue for NATO peacekeepers, a REAL force?
Another non Arab army in the region besides the Coalition and Israel.. Perhaps it's true that the more non Arabs on the ground in the Middle East, the better!?

It's my ingrained respect for Israel, but I feel there are games within games yet to be played, and they have always been the winner.

--Big Lizards excerpt (link below)
"So sometime in the next year or so, Israel will be back in Lebanon (possibly under a new prime minister); and this time, there will be no ceasefire. They will finish off Hezbollah as an effective military or terrorist organization in that country. And without either the Syrian Army or Hezbollah, the Syrian intelligence officers will quickly head back home, just ahead of the mobs of angry northern Lebanese with torches and pitchforks.

During that time, Iran will only be able to partially resupply Hezbollah; but when Israel attacks next time, they will no longer rely exclusively on bombs and missiles: next time, the IDF generals get their licks from the git-go. And that is the moment we're waiting for.

In other words, this ceasefire agreement is a "Mulligan," allowing Israel to restart the war somewhat later, with a still-weakened Hezbollah and with a much better military campaign planned. It's their chance finally to do what they should have done in the first place: treat this war as a real war, not as a spanking."

I refuse to be so pessimistic and still have faith that Bush has something up his sleeve, but on the bright side, if millions of Israeli Jews think they will be welcome elsewhere on earth, maybe the nation of Israel's work is done. It was created as a haven for displaced Jews worldwide and it may no longer needed to provide that function.

It would be quite interesting to see how long it would take for the 7th century atavists to destroy the modern state of Israel and reduce it to the rubble they're so much more comfortable with.

Then the question would be: What now?
