Separate but equal in England

British Muslims are demanding a state within a state:

British Muslim leaders meeting with government representatives to discuss ways of combating extremism are calling for the establishment of Islamic law (shari’a) to govern Muslims’ family life.

“We told her if you give us religious rights, we will be in a better position to convince [Muslim] young people that they are being treated equally along with other citizens,” said Syed Aziz Pasha, secretary general of the Union of Muslim Organizations of the U.K. and Ireland.

Did you get that?  These Muslims insist that the only way to treat British Muslims “equally” is to remove them entirely from the British judicial system.  In the topsy-turvy world of Islam, you cannot be equal if you are being held to Western legal standards.  Implicit in this, of course, is the thought that the only proper standard, the only “equal” standard, is sharia law.  And the next step is that, in a few years, Muslims will demand full equality for all British people by having them subscribe to sharia law as well.

I’ve long assumed that immigrants from Third World countries to the West made the trek because they were mired in poverty and oppression, and wanted to have access to the West’s economic opportunities and freedom.  The British Muslims, though, make me think I was all wrong.  I get the feeling that many of these people did come to the West, not to escape their situations, but truly to recreate them — that is, the plan all along was to create a worldwide caliphate, seeding it one immigrant at a time.
