How to handle bad cartoons

Jews all over the world have expressed outrage at the decision by Information, a Danish newspaper, to publish the Holocaust cartoons out of Iran — cartoons that either deny the Holocaust, celebrate it, or analogize the Jews to the same Nazis who attempted to annihilate them. Jewish groups are planning on boycotting Danish goods, and the publisher and staff at Information have already received several death threats. In rallies all over the world, Jews have been burning Iranian flags and carrying signs and banners threatening to behead anyone who publishes the cartoons.

Okay, as you’ve no doubt realized, the above paragraph is absolutely false. Well, not absolutely. There is one grain of truth in there, which is that a Danish paper has decided to publish the Iranian Holocaust cartoons:

A Danish newspaper has printed cartoons about the Holocaust commissioned by Iran after cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad triggered violent protests.

The newspaper – Information – published six of the cartoons, which are on display in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

Several of the cartoons contrast the plight of the Palestinians with that of the victims of the Holocaust.

Editor-in-chief Palle Weis said he had thought carefully about publishing the cartoons and said it was not a stunt.

He told the BBC the cartoons accompanied a news story about the exhibition. He said they were “tasteless but predictable”.

Everything else I said — that is, everything I said about what Jews have done now that the cartoons have been published — is completely made up.  Jews all over the world, while no doubt disgusted by the cartoons, are dong nothing at all to protest either Denmark or Information.

Of course, I didn’t create out of a whole cloth a scenario in which groups of people go ballistic over cartoons.  You would have to have been living in a cave if you didn’t realize I’m describing the Muslim cartoon riots that broke out all over the place earlier this year when a Danish paper published some cartoons that purported to show Mohammed. I leave you to decide which group embraced conduct that you would prefer to see in your community.
