Fanaticism is powerful. But up against a crafty and deceptive foe, the brute force of fanaticism is its own worst enemy.

It's a race to see who can get more support in the world. Islamic Jihad, or those who oppose them. One side uses peaceful dialogue and protective force. The other side uses violent rhetoric and threats, combined with physical intimidation and execution.

I don't think it really matters whether the Pope recognized the problems that could arise from his quote. We don't know and we'll never know his intentions. But I do think that this current uproar bespeaks our urgent need to learn more about the beliefs that are driving "extremist Muslims." The Pope did us a favor by bringing their violence to the center of the world's attention. They have an "agenda" and we need to address it, as I've been doing for many years.

Cool! I agree with Stratfor, though I'd add what the Anchoress does, when she says that the pope doesn't think exclusively or even primarily in geopolitical terms.

Interesting analysis. I hope it's true. I think the Pope's "apology" lends support to it. He didn't retract what he'd said, he just said he was sorry for the reaction to it.

Never heard of Strafor before. I looked it up and bookmarked the site. Thanks for bringing it to our attention, Bookworm!
