“It’s all your fault”

I’m no Stephen Sondheim fan, but I’ve always laughed at a song he wrote for his play “Into The Woods.” When things have gone wrong, all the characters turn on each other and begin to sing a song called “Your Fault,” in which each blames the others for the current situation, without acknowledging his or her own role.

I think John Edwards must have been studying that DVD, because there’s really no other way to understand his current approach to explain away his enthusiastic October 2002 vote for the Iraq War. A little history here:

Once his base became anti-War, Edwards began to blame the Bush administration for tricking him into voting for the war. I consider this a somewhat surprising position for Edwards to take. As you may or may not recall, Edwards sat on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and had access to all the intelligence that led up to the Iraq War. Under those circumstances, his plaintive “it’s all Bush’s fault” cry means that he was either too lazy to analyze the information himself or to stupid to understand it.

Putting aside Edward’s manifest and self-admitted failings, Edwards now has a problem with the fact that, in 2008, he won’t have George Bush to kick around any more. Captain Ed explains, however, that Edwards has found a new punching bag on which to blame the war vote he now regrets to strongly — it’s the Clinton administration’s fault:
