If it were up to me, he’d slowly be flayed alive

Some things make one yearn for good, old-fashioned medieval death by torture:

A sex offender was found guilty Wednesday of kidnapping and raping a 9-year-old girl and burying her alive in a case that led to a crackdown around the country on people convicted of sex crimes.

Jurors deliberated about four hours before returning the verdict against John Evander Couey in the slaying of Jessica Lunsford, who was snatched from her bedroom in 2005 about 150 yards from the trailer where Couey had been living.

Her body was found in a shallow hole, encased in two black plastic trash bags. She had suffocated, and was found clutching a purple stuffed dolphin.

The jury next must decide whether Couey, 48, should get death by injection or life in prison.  (Emphasis mine.)

As the mother of a 9 year old girl, emotionally I really have a problem with this guy either sitting around in prison reading comic books, or getting put down as humanely as a beloved family dog.   People like this ought to suffer horribly.  (And no, I’m not advocating a return to medieval execution practices.  I’m just venting.  The reason we have laws is to prevent the vigilante justice I’m thinking about right now.)

You may have to vent long-term. I’m betting Couey is never executed by the state of Florida.

Bookworm, there’s nothing wrong with “an-eye-for-an-eye”. It makes eminent sense to me in situations where guilt is undeniable. If I was Emperor of America you’d see a lot of changes. The Left would be rioting for the return of GW Bush.

My two daughters are adults now. Had something like this had happened to either one I would have done all in my power to kill the perp. I would have had no mercy.

I’d prefer that Couey simply be released into the general prison population. Given the social acceptance of a child rapist among even felons, he’d live the remainder of his life in constant terror.

Then, when we’ve had enough of it, we offer a carton of smokes to someone to just end it.

As Emperor…when the verdict was read in this case I’d just have the bailiff step forward and shoot the piece of shit.

Hmmm and why would it be wrong to him? Could anybody provide a rational explanation beyond “we don’t do that”?

There’s nothing particularly wrong with medieval execution techniques, it is just that with modern technology, there are far more efficient techniques that can be used.

There’s no real point to for psychological operations concerning this person, killing him efficiently should be enough. I save my more inventive techniques for terrorists if only because there are always more of them out there that can benefit from watching one of their people being made an example of.

In this case of course, being flayed alive would not really inflict all that great a damage on other potential rapists compared to the damage of an immediate and efficient execution.

These people are there to be made an example of, however. A fair solution would be the result of the meta-golden rule. Stick him in a pressure chamber, pump out the air, and complete the execution. One of the things he said during his interrogation was something to the effect of, I burried her alive, so she had to suffer a bit. It is not like he didn’t know. He just didn’t care. And so, I don’t really care for him either. But that also means it is a dispassionate sort of not caring. Death by suffocation is just as efficient with modern technology as death by lethal injection. Surely if the state wants to kill somebody, they should adhere to the principles of justice.

    Bookie,
I can’t even imagine. As the father of two girls; the Medieval thoughts that come through my mind….

That poor girl; her parents. The madness.

God will judge him. We can move that timetable up.

I wouldn’t waste time torturing him - he’s likely tortured enough - but just put him down in relatively humane fashion.
