As CDR Salamander said, it would be more popular if the gold coin actually felt like a dollar, like the Euro coin.

Yet something else the government can't manage to get done correctly...

The American people, almost uniquely, are strongly attached to paper dollars, and just about the only way that'll change will be if the mint just stops printing them - period. That would have the obvious effect of forcing change.

Every other country of which I can think has long since changed to a metal basic unit, just because it is the basic unit that receives the most circulation, and wears out (if paper) quickest. All of Europe, and Canada, have changed over, Canada even going to the point of producing a $2 coin as well as the single.

Yet here dollar coins have a history of resounding failure. I don't know why, but I kind of like it about us. Stubborn individualism, or something.

I wondered if they did it on purpose, to make a point, or hoping no one would notice. I posted about them not putting In God We Trust on the FACE of the coin, but on the side. of course they knew that would wear off in no time. Now these coins are worth huge amounts of money

I remember the same thing happening with the two dollar bill in '76. A minting error which made the first bills produced collectors items. Or am I imagining this?

Thank you, Kurt. As it happens, this was an "idle wondering" post. Considering how closely the coins resemble quarters, you need some marketing kick to make the population want these things. A little "mistake" is not a bad idea.

(Incidentally, I came across these coins precisely because of my kids -- they desperately wanted to see what they looked like, so I made a special trip to the bank just to get them. They're certainly not showing up at stores, as change, yet.)

Oh c'mon now, petal. Surely you aren't suggesting that the author remain at 100%, 100% of the time. Do you write anything? How 'bout offering it up?

As the mother of a 9 year old, the author certainly is allowed to put it on idle occasionally. A person can't stay intellectually razor sharp continually...otherwise by the time you've read The Pokey Little Puppy for the 500th time you'd...just...snap.

My suggestion to you: Read further. Your initial reaction just might embarrass you.

You have to imagine that the author of this blog receives compensation, from someone, for posting such sophistry. How else to explain a woman's compromising her intelligence for such ... venal nothingness. She herself might not feel embarrassed to attach her identity to this ignorance, but I guarantee her husband does.

Book,

My sentiments exactly...

The bureaucrats at the Mint are not dummies... (Well they probably are).

The very fact of the EBay sales will increase the demand.. and that is just what they wanted.

Personally, I don't want $20 worth of metal junk jangling around in my pants pocket.

On second thought I could install treble hooks on 'em and sell them for fishing lures. I'd quadruple my profit... These NY Snowbirds will buy anything..
