An honor and a responsibility

Tell me I’m beautiful, and I’ll guffaw (although I’ll concede “nice looking”).  Tell me I’m a good writer and thinker, and I’m putty in your hands.  Steve, at Out of the Binjo Ditch did me just that honor when he tagged me as one of the five bloggers who make him think. Of course, this meme can’t stop here, and it’s incumbent upon me to pass it on.

A couple of points, though, before I do my list.  First, as a matter of policy, I won’t include Steve in the list.  He does, in fact, make me think every time I read his blog, in part because he’s a true libertarian who doesn’t toe any specific party line and in part because he’s a lawyer in training who cares deeply about his new craft.  However, there’s a whiff of gratitude in naming the one who named you that makes it seem formulaic, rather than sincere, to include him.  Take it as given, therefore, that I deeply respect his blog and that it does make me think.

Second, the fact is that all the blogs in my blogroll make me think — they wouldn’t be there if they didn’t.  For that reason, there’s going to be a slightly random quality to my selection.  On the Tuesday that I write this, these five make me think; were I to write this tomorrow, on Wednesday, it might be those five.  Third, I’m choosing only long-tail bloggers — that is, the true pajama media people who have not transformed themselves into professional bloggers with millions of admirers.

Subject to all those caveats, here’s my list (in alphabetical order):

To those bloggers I love, but didn’t name, my apologies and truly no offense intended.  As I noted above, this was just today’s cull!
