Baghdad has a Shia, an Iranian, and a Sadr problem. Baghdad is a sensitive location, that is harder to deal with due to Bush already having given Iraqis local autonomy.

Currently the surge is targeted against Sunnis in Al Anbar and near provinces. The Shia question, due to their incredible percentage of the population and how Iran manipulates Iraq through agents in Shia locales, will have to be dealt with eventually. Leave it too soon, and bad things will occur.

But, as I said, what evidence do we have that they are presenting either facts or their own opinions?

If you choose to accept what you read in the New York Times, Associated Press stories, The New Republic, et al at face value, then feel free to do so.

I will remain skeptical.

It's easy enough, I think, to see how these NCO's could be both right and wrong. Right in that they are reporting their own experiences (albeit filtered through their own biases and background) and wrong in that those experiences may not be scalable to a larger context or even effectively understood as regards that larger context. Their opinions seem to be fairly well organized and written and they have a better grasp of the facts as they have described them than I but I don't think those facts necessarily lead to the conclusions stated. There is no reason to take them to task as they're just giving their opinion, which is as valid as mine.

What intrigues me most is that the essay written by the six NCOs reads more like an academic paper than something put together by six paratroopers, who by necessity, view the Iraqi scene from a very localized point of view. Look at these statements: (sic) ". . . an assesment arrived at through a flawed American-centered framework..." or ". . .important not to assess security from an American-centered perspective." Come on now. Sounds like something from a junior year International Relations classe

Color me cynical, but I would really like to know a bit more about these guys. Until then I reserve the right to be suspicious that they were provided with this material--to which they attached their names to give it "street cred".

Thanks for the link but all my blogging consisted of was linking to two pieces at Blackfive , including the one you linked above. I'd feel more comfortable if you'd link to the other one (<a href="http://www.blackfive.net/main/2007/08/coin-on-the-war.html" rel="nofollow">an excellent essay by Grim Beorn</a>) and just give me a hat tip.
