"Contrary to the hopes of bin Laden — and the fears of the U.S. government — the theology of jihadism has not taken root in the United States"

Contrary to the hopes of the MSM, hatred of Muslims has not taken root in the United States, either. All those stories of the vicious, intolerant haters of Middle America... where are they? The MSM has to search wide and far for cases of intolerance to Muslims, and most or all of such stories have some ambiguity to the claims.

In a nation of 300 million people, there oughta be a million anti-Muslim hate incidents every year! I'm sure the MSM thought so. What a shock to them, that basic American decency - you know, that American quality that the MSM doesn't believe in - basic American decency keeps winning the day.

When former President Jimmy Carter violates centuries of tradition by attacking the sitting President, you know that our liberal lefties have no understanding of basic American decency. They're completely at a loss. They'll never get it.

Maybe one additional reason we do not see more terrorism is the sheer moral evil of killing randomly. Probably only a few jihadis are psychopaths, like our domestic mass murderers; the favored targets for jihadist recruits look to be well educated, fully rational young men whose every human and moral instinct must be quashed through intense pressure and indoctrination. Our own high-level special forces guys--Seals, Rangers, and other CIA and NSA type operatives, must, like Plato's guardians, be taught to do otherwise horrific things for noble or patriotic reasons. Now, I DO NOT equate our soldiers and special ops guys with terrorists, except in the way that they must overcome in themselves the natural human moral impulse against killing. And in the case of terrorists, the killing is not combatants but wholly innocent human beings they must somehow convince themselves deserve violent death at their hands. Such indoctrination, to be able to overcome the normal impulses of human nature, must be extensive and intensive--which is to say, expensive in time and money. Even our home-grown psycho serial killers do not start out that way--there is a long development (devolution) process involved in the mental life of a would-be killer before he can ever ACTUALLY do it. I believe it is a rare thing for a rational, functioning human being to be able to suppress the absolute moral revulsion we all feel for killing of the innocent, not to mention self-murder. The vast majority of low-level, independent al quaida franchisees that probably frequent the jihadi websites, dreaming or bragging about martydom, are never able, because they are not psychopaths, to gin up whatever it is that Mohammed Atta and Co. were able to to in order to kill the enemies of Allah (in his mercy).

This is one of the weaknesses of fanatics. They can't make individual strategic choices that are optimized. They need to be lead around the nose by smarter and wiser leaders, leaders that have been fragmented or killed by the Americans.

We see again in human social groups that leadership is far more important than simple what a group's beliefs are.

True, rockdalian, we are not Spanish. Bin Laden is supposed to have been very surprised by our response to 9/11. Also, I agree with you that I see terrorist attack opportunities all around me, but they would carry consequences. It is probably difficult for Al-Qaeda central to plan complex attacks around the world when they are constantly being hunted...as it should be!

One final question...just how many of Book's fans on this post, here, come from Chicagoland? Just asking.

As you know, I drive a semi for a living. I do tanker work in the Chicago area. Empty and loaded tanks are stolen regularly, all over the nation. It really doesn't take much to steal one and fill it with whatever and drive it almost anywhere.
I have been less than a half mile of downtown Chicago and never been checked.
Not to be pessimistic, but doing something with a loaded tanker is surprisingly simple.
I routinely haul approximately 7,400 gallons of product.
This is a roundabout way to say that I am surprised something has not happened.
My cynical nature has me wondering why. I suppose the terrorists do not want to do anything that would swing the election to the Conservatives due to an attack. We are after all,as a people, certainly not the Spanish.
