In honor of election day:

Core Conservative Belief: Voting is the basis of our form of government and in order to preserve faith in the system, it is most important to minimize voter fraud even if that occasionally results in eligible people not being allowed to vote (e.g., they don't take the time or have the initiative to get a free photo ID card, they didn't register at least a month prior to the election, etc.)

Progressive Belief: Voting is the basis of our form of government and in order to preserve faith in the system, it is most important that everyone gets to vote even if that occasionally results in voter fraud (e.g., illegal aliens, multiple votes by people registering the day of the elections making it impossible to verify their eligibility, felons, etc.)

Book, that is a very well written collection of compromise core beliefs that Conservatives in all cliques could rally around!

The problem is that if any single issue is critical to you, you would not want to give up your demand that everyone toes the line.

Religious conservatives want abortion banned, period, because it is murder. They want no half-measures. They will view your paragraph on abortion as mealy-mouthed and hopelessly conciliatory. And where did you address how homosexuality is destroying the moral fabric of American society? That's very important to them as well.

Libertarian conservatives (such as myself) see fiscal restraint and prudence as crucial and detest the fact that religious conservatives have become big-government proponents.

Religious conservatives detest the fact that libertarian conservatives have no respect for traditional values, because traditional values often emphasize community well-being at the expense of individual freedom. These traditional values, however, WORK, and libertarians need to express support for them. Now THAT would be a compromise on our side!

I wonder if Rudy will buy into your "core conservative belief" on abortion....I mean, when has he ever been willing to affirm that

"Roe v. Wade was a badly decided opinion that...should be overturned, so that the question of abortion can be returned to the states, where it belongs."

I happen to agree with you, which kind of leaves Rudy outside of the group we'd call "conservative", which is why Dobson, along with many others, has a problem with voting for him. I'd also agree that the alternative has to be something beside staying home in 2008, because that will just elect Hillary.....the conservatives had better look over the field and get behind someone who shares their core beliefs if they wish to have a candidate other than Rudy Giuliani next year.

Good summary.

Dobbs suffers from "king-maker" delusions.

I'm tired of him and his ilk speaking for Conservatives, for the faithful or for me.
