If your son was excited (as it appears) he can maintain that energy for 20-25 minutes; well within the time for a healthy kid to run 3.1 miles. Anyhow, congrads to your son - I hope he keeps up the running. His coach will be pleased in soccer, too, if he does. Endurance means speed at the end of the game, when everyone else is gassed.
