She can be a great writer, but all I heard was a snobby Manhattan doyenne who wouldn't dream of supporting anyone but that "charming" McCain. It was almost frightening how incapable she was of going beyond her own narrowly defined cult of personality. It reminded me of that anecdote about Pauline Kael's shock when Nixon one and how she, a Manhattanite who never strayed beyond the island's borders, kept going around saying, "I don't know how it happened. I worry more about Romney's lack of foreign experience as being a negative, although he certainly would not have to defend himself on that score against the Democrat contenders.
