The quantity of smug self-loathing was astonishing. No, not quite right. It wasn't self-loathing. The smug posters all had boundless contempt for the rest of us in this blighted wasteland of consumerist tyranny, but they themselves are presumably beacons of enlightenment. Go with the classics: "E Pluribus Unum. Novus Ordo Seclorum." I couldn’t bring my self to scroll down on the Times article. The quantity of smug self-loathing was astonishing.
