Bald-Headed Geek,

I'm surprised that you say that you don't remember the anger coming from the counterculture of the 60s.

Don't you remember the self-proclaimed Days of Rage by the counterculture of the late 60s?

The barbarians are always at the gates. In this case, the barbarians are actually already inside the gates. Keeping them from opening the gates to the other barbarians, now that is the challenge.

I think that your analysis of Bezerkeley is spot on, Bookworm. Even though I have never been there, I am well aware that Cal-Berkeley is one of the finest schools in the country, but the people who are attracted to the region are truly the "nuttiest of the nuts". But, that said, there is (as you noted) a meanness, hostility to their politics. I know enough 60s refugees to know that even during the highpoint of the counterculture years, in 1968 or so, there wasn't the anger that permeates the politics there now. Frankly, it's more than a little scary, because in a general sense, as California goes, so the entire country (eventually) goes. And, in a more specific sense, as Berkeley goes, so goes California (again, eventually). So, one has to wonder if this is what our future might be like? If so, it is a dark one indeed...........
