It’s not a miracle *UPDATED*

Beatie.jpgThe headline reads “Pregnant man tells Oprah: It’s a miracle.” The story, of course, is about “Thomas” Beatie, the “man” who is pregnant.

Let me put this in very simple words: It’s not a miracle, because Thomas is not a man. Thomas is a woman who sliced her breasts off and who takes pills that make her have a beard. Her innards, the bits she was born with, are still those of a woman, complete with ovaries and uterus — the traditional, and necessary, equipment for pregnancy.

The fact that she sliced and diced her exterior, or that she takes pills that affect her hormones, does not make it miraculous at all that she’s pregnant. If that’s the criterion for pregnancy, every women who has had breast surgery, has pierced herself, has tattoos, or has in any other way messed with her external appearance for whatever reason, or who has taken medicine, can also claim miracle status when the baby comes along.

The hype around this is disgusting.

UPDATE: Looking at the picture, is it me, or does she currently look like a guy with a serious beer gut?

I’m with you Book. I ignored the story for a few days, knowing it was not possible. I finally relented and read the story and I was astonished that the article called her a man throughout, even after acknowledging that he was in fact a she.

Well, if he/she has a beard and is gaining other male characteristics, then there must be some kind of chemical alteration going on, usually involving testosterone or steroids?

What effect might this kind of chemical alteration have on a fetus? Eventually I hope to find out if the baby is normal at birth. That’s the only thing about this story I find interesting… aside from its “News Of The Weird” vibe, that is.
