Bookworm,

Funny unimportant thing,

French speaking people ( like me ) use the spelling " nec plus ultra",
while English speaking people use "ne plus ultra"

I googled both expression and can not find why if it is Latin expression, English and French speaking people are useing different spelling?...

Would any body know?

"they’re so blinded by their obsequious desire to placate any group that isn’t America, that they are yielding ground at warp speed to people who firmly believe in an unimpeded right to slaughter women"

In a sane America, feminist groups would be pressing Barack Obama to take a stand against honor killings of women in Islam. (and it is almost always a horrific death, full of pain and suffering...) In ths country, they are red-hot on the trail of men who even PUSH their women. When the father and the two uncles strangle, stomp, and knife this teenage girl, though... the feminists are strangely silent. Go figure.

It truly is inexplicable.

Greetings:

I understand your concern with these "honor" killings and join in your condemnation of them.

There is one point I would like to add to your analysis. These killings actually pre-date the arrival of Islam and stem from the Arab tribal culture, especially its nomadic groups. Philip Carl Salzman addresses this in his recent book "Culture and Conflict in the Middle East." What Islam did/does is to expand the oppositional nature of Arab tribal culture to a global basis.

I fear that in only connecting these killings to Islam and not the underlying tribal culture we will not deal with the whole problem.
