McCain’s maturity

I love Noemie Emery’s take on why the media may be a little too optimistic in thinking McCain’s age (which used to be a valued commodity in a world leader) is a problem:
Sphere: Related ContentMcCain does look old, and this is a problem. On the other hand, he looks like a rock, or an oak tree, while Obama looks more like a reed or a sapling, if not like a twig. He looks attractive, but not too substantial, not someone to look to in trouble. McCain looks as if he could stand up through a hurricane, while Obama might waft away on the wind. He would be better than McCain as an underwear model, but do we really need this in a president? In this case, “young vs. old” could also be read as “weak vs. strong,” in which case it flips to McCain’s advantage, as we are selecting a commander-in-chief, and not the star of a serial. Unless it could be ‘24.’ (Emphasis mine.)

In a way it’s the difference between John Wayne - or Clint Eastwood - and Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise is a pretty face and can act, but who would you rather have backing you?
I’ll take McCain over Obama. America over the Wright/Ayers Socialist Utopia.
Not to mention that it is Obama, not McCain, that appears to suffer from senior moments when he’s off the teleprompter.
McCain does not look like an oak to me. He looks like a little old man who has a very hard time delivering a speech. He sounds like a little old man who is trying to talk to 3rd graders and doesn’t want to scare them by talking too loud or sounding harsh.
I hate to say it, although McCain is a couple of years younger than I am , he looks and sounds even older than I feel in the morning. He does not give me confidence. I keep reminding myself that he is better than the alternative, and that is not encouraging.
Watching Robin Williams yesterday make horrible visual jokes about McCain’s semi-paralyzed arms is a reminder of why he looks more gnome-like than robust. He still seems to be in great shape.
Also, the fuss about his age is a bit overstated. He’s no spring chicken, but he’s not significantly older than other Presidents who came to office in times of much lower longevity, and he’s in better health than many (with FDR springing to mind as an example of a man in disastrous health).
