Cyd Charisse’s favorite dance — and mine

I’m a huge fan of Hollywood musicals, and one of my favorite numbers has long been “Dancing in the Dark,” from the Band Wagon (with Cyd Charisse and Fred Astaire).  Turns out it was her favorite too.  Here it is for those of you who haven’t seen it before or haven’t seen it recently:

Those were the days, weren’t they, When Hollywood still knew how to entertain?

From an obit, excerpted at Born Again Redneck:

Looking back on her work with Kelly and Astaire during a 2002 interview in The New York Times, Charisse said that her husband, Martin, always knew whom she had been dancing with. “If I was black and blue,” she said, “it was Gene. And if it was Fred, I didn’t have a scratch.”

In a 1992 interview with The Times, she remembered dancing with Astaire to Michael Kidd’s demanding choreography in “Silk Stockings” and said admiringly, “Fred moved like glass.”

    She was a classic!

In the musical movie biz, you know you’re among class when MGM makes a movie like “The Band Wagon”, directed by Vincente Minnelli…..

..and has an uncredited writer by the name of Alan Jay Lerner contributing his stuff to it!

Yes, we thought we were so liberated in the 60s onward. But Cyd, and Dinah Shore, Doris Day, and many others… THEY were hot as hell.

Ladies, you are trying to attract Men, not flies.

    I love it!

And I love her dress. I wish they made dresses like that today. . . .
