Throughout my early WASP upbringing, I understood that "mensch" identified a man of integrity and strength. And the word was always uttered with a slight emphasis to give additional indication of approval to the person discussed.
After reading more and more of both McCain and Obama, McCain is the mensch, and Obama is the anti-mensch.

Stark is the perfect word, Earl. McCain is no prince, but mainstream Republicans (unlike the purists among us in the blogosphere) seem to feel that he was the most tolerable. Obama is simply scary. I fear the long-term damage he can do more than I fear that long-term damage McCain can do. On the problem scale, McCain is a molehill; Obama a mountain.

I'm not a big McCain fan, but the choices are pretty stark this year, aren't they?
