Jo Stafford, one of the best big band songbirds of the 1940s, died yesterday. She was 90 years old. Words don’t do her justice. You have to hear her music. Here are two of her best known recordings:

In addition to having a beautiful singing voice, Jo also had a very strong voice akin to that of the late Laura Branigan.
Maybe that’s why she had such a long career.
I remember Jo Stafford from the Hit Parade back in 51 along with many others. Also that song was sang in the auditorium at Emerson H.S. in Gary,Indiana about 1955. I was 10 at the time.Jack here is a youtube link for Laura Branigan and also the same song only done by Michael Bolton. Actually this is for everyone on this blog especially BW.

Thanks, Mike
The song, “How am I supposed to live without you” is sung differently by a man and a woman, because of the lyrics and their meaning to the person singing. It is unfair to say that Bolton’s version is better, as a YouTube commenter does.
After reading the London Telegraph biography of Jo Stafford, it blows the mind how many talented musicians and singers Jo Stafford came in contact with during the best period of popular American music in the 20th century, during the Depression and World War II years, the 30s and 40s.
Some say that the pop music when one is teenager through early twenties is what sticks with you. I was around 30 when Laura Branigan hit it big, and this mention of her plus the video is , as far as I know, the first time I was aware of her. OTOH, I knew Jo Stafford’s singing, and have several of her recordings- including some comic ones as Darleen Edwards.
