Friends don’t let friends get immolated in a nuclear holocaust

Obama’s getting the press, but McCain’s saying the important stuff, at least to those who believe that Israel, as the sole liberal democracy in the Middle East, deserves our support:
American presidential candidate John McCain told Israel’s Channel 2 News station that stiffer sanctions might stop Iran’s threats against Israel. In the interview broadcast Monday, the Republican candidate said that in any event, the US would not allow Iran to try to destroy Israel.
Asked about Israel feeling the need to attack Iran, McCain replied, “I would hope that would never happen. I would hope that Israel would not feel that threatened.” He added that the US and Europe could impose “significant, very painful sanctions on Iran which I think could modify their behavior.”
“But I have to look you in the eye and tell you that the United States of America can never allow a second Holocaust,” he affirmed. (Emphasis mine.)

Given Obama’s stated desire to rid the world of nuclear weapons, and the hostility to Israel on the part of so many of his supporters, I think it very likely that he would pressure Israel to give up its atomic capability. This would likely be tied to some deal with the Iranians.
If Israel went along with this deal…and Iran agreed to suspend its own nuclear program…then Israel would be at serious risk of defeat by a coordinated Iranian/Arab attack with conventional fores.
If Israel refused to go along with the deal…as it almost certainly would…then Obama would have an excuse for denying American military and industrial cooperation with Israel. Given that Israel is too small to be economically and militarily self-sufficient, such an isolation effort–especially if supported by European powers–could be cripplig.
McCain’s message to Israel - and everyone else - had two key words…”…the US would not allow Iran to try to destroy Israel.”
Class: do we all know what the word “preemption means?
