Alright, totally OT.
I was Ernest in “The Importance of Being Ernest” in a community theater production.
The makeup person the first night told me- “I’m going to make you a greek god” (or something to that effect).
After the performance, my future wife asked one of the other cast members for an introduction, and the rest is history. (I did take off the makeup– but the spell had already been cast).

It does work — it is, after all, how I met my husband. I’ve always joked that he fell in love with my dog before he fell in love with me.

We have a cat and two dogs, and when our Liberian son arrived, it took him some time to adjust to the idea of these animals as pets. He couldn’t understand why we allowed the cat to be in the house (the dogs are outside animals).
At first he was ‘mean’ to the animals– and couldn’t understand why we objected to that.
He has since adjusted to this new cultural norm– though he still doesn’t throw the ball for the dogs, or allow the cat to sit on his lap.
Once again, America stands alone.

And I have never once used a dog as a pickup ploy– though I have been told it works.

Deana: How barbaric. Something is deeply wrong when you don’t love dogs and cats.

Dogs in the US are generally treated as pampered members of the family, and the dogs’ demeanor generally reflects that. It is a win-win situation.The dogs are treated with kindness, and the dogs respond with affection.

In many parts of the Third World, dogs are on their own, running in packs. If you approach one of those pack dogs, you are likely to get bitten. People fear pack dogs, with reason.

It’s stuff like this, though, that starts waking up at least a few on the left of the horror that exists in these countries. Otherwise, when we just talk about the restriction of liberties, the only thing we get out of the left is, “well, you know, it’s their culture and we need to honor that.”

Grrr.

How barbaric. Some is deeply wrong when you don’t love dogs and cats.

Somebody had better get the big guns on this one and call PETA, ’cause you just know that an edict like this will swiftly be followed by street-corner beheadings of dogs (and maybe their owners, too).

PETA is probably the number one killer of dogs, the ones they can capture anyways.

Don’t call PETA. They don’t want you to have pets either. It’s true that beheadings of dogs would upset them, but they’d approve of not being allowed to buy or own them.
