They were never trained as conversationalists, Book. You can only expect so much from people trying to fill the space of silence and ignorance.

Dear Bookie,

Agreed with you, 100%. I'm just not getting worked up over the Chicom lovefest. I'm stunned Obama wasn't on the sidelines. Mebbe he could have made the US b-ball squad.

I'm sure you heard the fireworks were faked -- a product of computer simulation:

Yeah. I'm house sitting in Mill Valley so I've been watching it on the big screen.

But I'm really suffering. Everytime one of the commentators says Beijing I lose another piece of my liver.
Basic English does not have the sound "hggh." French does, that's why we have words like beige (the color).
Chinese doesn't have that sound either. Beijing is pronounced in a simple flat high tone.
Repeat after me..."Bei" as in San Francisco "Bay."
...."jing" as in "jingle" bells, bat man smells.
No more stupid French accents, please...it's killing me.

Note of the curious: bei means north, jing means capital.

I thought I would just catch the first of the Opening Ceremony and switch to something else, but I am a sucker for ceremony and this one kept me interested the whole time. I was totally ticked off at the commenters - clueless frequently and just wrong on other facts. C'est la vie.

And, I, too, loved the response when Teams USA were introduced. Awesome. And, also when Yao Ming - a star here in my city - brought in the Chinese flag with the little boy who survived the recent earthquake? Brought tears to my eyes. Yeah, I'm a sap.
