I know what you mean. I used to swim competitively, so the swimming is near and dear. My favorite Olympic sport has been gymmnastics, <a href="http://benningswritingpad.blogspot.com/2008/08/i-just-dont-know.html" rel="nofollow">but this time around it feels "off"</a> and I believe it's the Beijing venue. The whole thing feels like "The Prisoner" television show, somehow.

A wonderful post, Bookworm. You're right about diluting the Olympic brand, I think, an about how overwhelming the nonstop coverage can be. Frankly, I wish NBC had spent more of its prime time coverage on sports like fencing. But I don't mind beach volleyball, and "all Phelps, all the time" will fade as swimming makes way for track and field.

Among the gymnasts, you already know I'm rooting for Germany's Oksana Chusovitina. And notwithstanding the mistakes they made, Alicia Sacramone and her U.S. teammates have nothing to apologize for-- the idea that they "stumbled" to a silver medal really gets on my nerves. At elite competition levels, any team can beat any other team on any given day. The only exception to that rule is the one that everybody sees coming from a mile away, as when the U.S. basketball "Dream Team" basically put on a show for the rest of the world in 1992.
