To continue the previous Biden post and responding to Ellie2...

Biden's from working class Pennsylvania? This is the same Biden who responded, when asked whether the South could support his presidential candidacy, as follows:

"You don't know my state," he said. "My state was a slave state. My state is a border state. My state has the eighth-largest black population in the country. My state is anything from a Northeast liberal state."

I'm confused. Is he blue or gray?

This is the guy who proposed Iraq be partitioned into three states — one Sunni, one Shiite, one Kurdish.

Well, so did Ralph Peterson. It's not like lack of faith in the United States is focused solely on Biden.

Maybe this is how Rome fell, Book. Something got into the water supply and their version of the AP changed. Pretty horrific, isn't it.

From what source is Senator Biden's putative "foreign policy expertise" derived? This is the guy who proposed Iraq be partitioned into three states -- one Sunni, one Shiite, one Kurdish. I don't believe a majority of Iraqis want this and certainly the Turks would not be thrilled about a Kurdish state on their southern border. I've always thought the Senator from Delaware was kind of an ass.

Tiresias - interesting theory!

I can't help it - my heart took a little leap when I heard that Obama's choice was Biden. This can only be good for McCain.

Biden has never been impressive politically. It appears from Gringo's comments he successfully overcame personal trauma. Good for him.
I wonder if the AP's reaction is an attempt by some in the DNC to open a door for Hillary at the convention.

This is just a personal interest story I read about Biden many years ago, most likely in the Seventies, to remind us that even politicians we oppose have a personal side. As has been previously noted, Biden’s first wife and infant daughter were killed in an auto accident shortly after Biden was elected to the Senate, leaving him with two young sons to raise. That could not have been easy.

Several years later, he began to date his present wife. She established rapport not only with Biden, but with his young sons, to the extent that at some point one of his sons approached his father with the following message. “Daddy, I think we should marry Jill.” This may have been a joint message from both the sons, I don’t remember.

Establishing rapport in these conditions with the children is not a done deal at all. A family friend lost her husband in an auto accident, leaving her with two young children. Six years later she married a widower with two children. While her children established rapport with their stepfather, the widower’s children never established rapport with their stepmother.

Kudos to Senator Biden and his wife. That being said, in my opinion he has done such a good a job as a Senator that I hope he remains a Senator.

I must say I find the whole concept of Biden amusing - if there ever was a bottom-of-the-barrel hack who's very presence comnpletely obliterates the idea of "change," or "new," or whatever Obama's mantra of the week might be,it would be Joe Biden.

But - this of course leads me to wonder how Obama - himself a nothing - ended up with such a nothing.

Only two ways I can see:

1. Everybody else declined with thanks, not wishing to be associated with a campaign that they already consider to be doomed, or;

2. Bill and Hillary threatened anyone who might be serious and be taken seriously.

Myself, I kind of incline to #2. We'll never know, of course, but I don't put it at all above Bill's pay grade to have quietly told everyone: "you run with him, boy, you'll never work in this town again..." or something along those lines.

I don't put that past Bill and Hillary at all.

I'm getting a whiff that reporters in all media -- radio, TV, Internet, print -- were seriously put out over the "drama" of the text messaging stunt. And the teases "that it might come today..." every day this week.

Reporters (and on-air personalities) are bound by deadlines. By finally making the announcement near midnight on Friday, after everyone thought they were done for the week or packing for Denver, they pulled everyone back into the office.

As a friend of mine once said years ago "you don't get good press when you mug the reporter."
