Hell is a religious teaching but hell isn't. The lower case "hell" is just used to describe the predicted contentions of hell as applied here on Earth. Since that is literally impossible, it is not a literal use of the term but a metaphorical one.

Hhhmmm, huge Palin fan here but...
It is kind of ironic that you used Hell as an word to describe war. Hell is a religious teaching which Christopher Hitchens pointed out is akin to child abuse. Really, it is difficult for me to take ease from the notion that Palin or Bush consider themselves sinners headed for Hell if they don't stay up on the repentance thing. Of course they teach their children that we are all sinners, and our presumption of redemption does not give us the right to judge others. Still, they would say they believe that we are going to hell if we do not repent. Is that not a cruel thing to teach children?...you will burn in hell!!!
Then again, I do love a good horror movie--maybe they are on to something.

If war was like social justice, everybody would be doing it and feeling self-righteous about it. War is hell to make people stop warring and not start it up in the first place.

RE: "the Vietnam War was a bad war, therefore all wars are bad wars. Wars are certainly hell, and there have been bad wars, but not all wars are bad."

Bookworm, are you saying that some hell is good? Huh.

One of the best examples of a false syllogism: Hitler and other Axis leaders used patriotism to motivate their people to do terrible things. Therefore, patriotism is harmful.

This is structurally equivalent to the argument that: The Nazis used trains to carry people to concentration camps. Therefore, we should abolish railroads.
