I immediately bought his book, Dreams of My Father. When Tony Blair spoke to a joint session of Congress following 9/11, he brought these jaded, cynical wheeler-dealers to their feet and to tears. I believe that the power of Obama is the power of Oratory; it is what caused Matthews' famous tingle up his leg. It's what caused women to faint at O's rallies. It is what makes Pastors of Mega-Churches millionaires. It's what grows Mega-churches in the first place. BW & DQ would know better than me, but I suspect it is also what makes trial lawyers rich. Kennedy and Reagan were both great orators. All the rest in my lifetime were/are duds. Dubya at the bottom. McCain pretty close to bottom. A great orator, even more than a great poet, feeds our soul. Great oratory is a form of music, I think, and like music stirs our heart. Unlike DQ, I don't think it's *what* he says, I think it is how he says it. Sad to say, historically, the better orator wins. Bright spot: the debates (where oratory does not come into play). Pray for America.
