That wouldn’t surprise me. Eisenhower, the first Republican elected since the New Deal, did not dismantle the New Deal. LBJ defeated the ‘warmonger’ Goldwater and then took us to war. The old Cold Warrior Nixon went to China. Reagan did not make government smaller and actually created a new Cabinet level department. Clinton signed off on welfare reform. Once in office, men elected President often do not do what you expect they will do. Funny old world, ain’t it?

If Obama is elected, as I suspect he will be, then parsing the utterances of Babblefish Joe is going to be a continual and onerous task. The guy is a crossbreed of the Oracle at Delphi and a used car salesman. I’m not sure too much significance should be read into this particular soundbite. What he may have been trying to communicate to the Assembled Faithful is that in the event of (inevitable) provocation the Obamanian response will be more hawk-like than dove-like, perhaps even reminiscent of the Dreaded Bush in its cracking of U.S. muscle, which will shock and appall the Democrat base, testing their progressive faith, eliciting spasms of betrayal and recrimination. After all, Obama was willing to toss old mentors like Rev Wright over the side like ballast in order to steer past the shoals. You think he wouldn’t do the same on a larger scale?
