The mistake in your analysis, BrianE, is that "taxpayers" will own nothing of bank stock and devalued mortgages. It is government, supposedly in the name of taxpayers, that will own it. Taxpayers will never see it.

Listening to the editor of Der Zeit defend John McCain policies and some French guy extoll the virtues of Obama, something became apparent. The notion that the bailout represents the beginnings of socialism in America is gaining as an urban legend.

Conservatives need to distinguish what has just happened with the bailout from socialism.
It's been easy allow the narrative that this is socialism lite to gain traction and this will be dangerous going forward. If the republicans gave us a little socialism, what's wrong with a little more via the democrats.

Whether it was wrong or not, or actually have an impact in a mutli-trillion dollar economy, the taxpayers will receive something for the money-- perferred shares (non-voting) of bank stock and ABS of devalued mortgages. While this may be foolish economic policy, I doesn't fit the definition of socialism.
Given the inablity of the media filters to explain much beyond the cost of Palin's wardrobe, we can't expect much help form them.
While it may be considered a distinction without a difference by some, it will further the socialization of America that much quicker if we can't provide a rational distinction.

I just finished reading Robert Kaplan's awesome book on the military, "Hog Pilots, Blue Water Grunts". He is an editor with the Atlantic Monthly and a Liberal. In this book, he imbeds with U.S. military units, large and small, all over the world (even piloting a B-2, at one point) and his awe for what the U.S. military does not only as warriors but as community developers and statesmen is evident.

What is also evident is that he "gets it".

If and when the Obama people get into power, the world WILL burn.

If you haven't read this book, YM, it is right up your alley. You too, Book.

Perhaps the most enduring line from the recent Batman movie - “some people just want to see the world burn”.

It's easier than making a choice, taking a stand, and trying to build something lasting in this world. Human beings always follow the course of least resistance for the great majority of the bell curve for the species.

Danny -

Well said in comment #4.

I'm not sure what is going to happen in this election but one thing I know: should Obama win, many of the people who voted for him will regret it. And I don't mean that they just won't agree with some of positions. They will regret their vote and wish desperately that they hadn't voted for him.

Unfortunately, it will be too late.

My wish for you, Helen, is that you may soon enjoy the full consequences of your convictions and decisions. Unfortunately, so will we.

Really bright, apposite comment there, Helen.

AIDS is winning too, we still don't have a vaccine for it.

The clap is also winning, despite decades of public education and readily available cures the incidence of it continues to rise.

Lousy things often "win." I'm not sure its worthy of celebration.

It seems quite clear that when Helen read the article, when she got to the paragraph,

Yet Conservatism is pretty simple, and is based on just a few principles. Human nature remains constant, and thus is predictable across time and space. There is a certain humility that comes with conservatism, since the ways of the world, despite the technological chaos, are constant.,

all that passed through her liberal filter was "mumble, mumble, blah, blah, blah".
