The notion that the bailout represents the beginnings of socialism in America is gaining as an urban legend. Conservatives need to distinguish what has just happened with the bailout from socialism. It's been easy allow the narrative that this is socialism lite to gain traction and this will be dangerous going forward. If the republicans gave us a little socialism, what's wrong with a little more via the democrats. Whether it was wrong or not, or actually have an impact in a mutli-trillion dollar economy, the taxpayers will receive something for the money-- perferred shares (non-voting) of bank stock and ABS of devalued mortgages. While this may be foolish economic policy, I doesn't fit the definition of socialism. Given the inablity of the media filters to explain much beyond the cost of Palin's wardrobe, we can't expect much help form them. While it may be considered a distinction without a difference by some, it will further the socialization of America that much quicker if we can't provide a rational distinction. He is an editor with the Atlantic Monthly and a Liberal. In this book, he imbeds with U.S. military units, large and small, all over the world (even piloting a B-2, at one point) and his awe for what the U.S. military does not only as warriors but as community developers and statesmen is evident. What is also evident is that he "gets it". If and when the Obama people get into power, the world WILL burn. If you haven't read this book, YM, it is right up your alley. You too, Book.
