That may be why conservatism, which I’ve concluded is better reasoned and more logically coherent, translates so badly in a world shaped by MTV’s vapid visual sound bytes.

It is not just that. Consider the fact that it takes a certain kind of mentality to sell anything to the government and to guillible people. It takes a con man's personality.

This tends to mean that people in marketing, those who must project confidence in a subject in order to sell it and they don't particularly care who buys it or not, tend to do better in these propaganda fields. Con men tend to be natural marketers.

A lot of the TV glitz advertisement is also designed to produce hype and to create an intense interest on the part of the consumer to buy. They neither have the time nor inclination to explain "why" buying is good for you. You have to figure that one out on yourself.

And for most people, they either don't figure it out for themselves or they lack the background knowledge to figure it out for themselves.

Visual propaganda is more powerful than written propaganda because the human brain is programmed to believe what it sees over what it imagines. When people are reading, they are creating abstract concepts and linking them to real experiences.

What this means is that weak willed individuals, like young hotshot idiots, are more susceptible to visual propaganda than written propaganda. But Leni Riefenstahl already knew this and so did Michael Moore.

Thank you, Radiant. I appreciate that.

As for you point, Mike, it's an excellent one. I'm a word person and am not at all visual. I simply don't think in images, although I can appreciate product from someone who does. I do think that word people and image people rely on very different parts of the brain -- and perhaps the latter ties in a bit more strongly than the former to parts that govern emotions. That may be why conservatism, which I've concluded is better reasoned and more logically coherent, translates so badly in a world shaped by MTV's vapid visual sound bytes.

Excellent video.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video may be worth tens of thousands.

We are living in a video age. I'm beginning to think my love of the written word keeps me from being effective, since I have not joined the video age. I should be communicating via words and video, if I really want to be effective...

(The same is true of our conservative representatives in government. They issue a lot of "written statements". Then, during campaigns, they try to point to those "written statements" to indicate that they had the right position all along. (Think: George Bush and John McCain on Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the housing bubble.) Meanwhile, their Democrat opponents bluster and fulminate in front of video cameras... and win the day, hands down. (Think Christopher Dodd, Bawney Fwank, Maxine Waters.)

The video argument will almost always trump the written word, in this day and age, no matter the quality of the written argument. And who, by the way, controls the video argument to the vast majority of the American public?

In any case, if you agree this video is effective, let's pass it on.

I try very hard to imagine what it would be like to live under such a threat, but it's beyond my powers. I'm just glad and relieved that Israel has not backed down from defending herself this time around. May she know true peace soon.

Bookworm, your site has been a daily read for quite awhile. Forgive me for not registering to say 'thank you' and 'good work' until now.
