Climate change
Bookworm on Mar 03 2009 at 8:47 am | Filed under: Uncategorized
I’m rushing off to work, but we had our thirty seconds of climate change here in Marin: Two huge bolts of lightening, house shaking thunder and a minute of pea-sized hail coming down in sheets. Very exciting, and the neighborhood seems to have escaped the hail unscathed. (Back in my Texas days, when the hail was the size of grapefruits, the damage could be spectacular.)
Consider this an open thread until this afternoon. I know there’s a lot out there today, as Obama continues to be a grapefruit-sized piece of hail himself, creating economic destruction in a wide, American-sized swath.

Your Texas days?
Obama’s the asteroid in Armageddon, Book, not no hail sized grapefuit thingie ; )
Changeable weather is one of the greatest boons of civilization–you can talk about it with everyone. I often wonder what people in quiet climates talk about in bus stops and elevators without thunder and hail and humidity and blizzards–all in one day–to bring them together.
Since this is an open thread while Bookworm is busy, I thought I’d post my favorite story of the day:
“Upper-Income Taxpayers Look for Ways to Sidestep Obama Tax-Hike Plan”
http://abcnews.go.com/Business/Economy/Story?id=6975547&page=3
The money quote:
“Dr. Sharon Poczatek, who runs her own dental practice in Boulder, Colo., said that she too is trying to figure out ways to get out of paying the taxes proposed in Obama’s plan.
“I’ve put thought into how to get under $250,000,” said Poczatek. “It would mean working fewer days which means having fewer employees, seeing fewer patients and taking time off.”
“Generally it means being less productive,” she said.”
Well, gosh, who would have predicted that???
I swear, the people that think this is news or any kind of surprise must be amazed that the sun rises in the east every day.
I swear, the people that think this is news or any kind of surprise must be amazed that the sun rises in the east every day.
They are the ones that will be amazed when the jack boot thugs they voted in finally come for them in the dead of night.
I know a guy here where I live who has a lot of money, or at least he did have a lot of money. He invested in stocks a la Warren Buffett and made lots of lucre. He was quite vocal about the eeeeevil Republicans and how they were not the friend of the little man (which he considered himself) and how thrilled he was that Obama was president.
I’ll bet he is crying in his portfolio and blaming Bush.
kali:
I am sure they’re talking at all – too busy at a beach laughing it up and tch-tching about those poor people who have to contend with winter.
Ellen –
I don’t know about you but I’m planning on asking all these people who have a little bit of money and voted for Obama what their thoughts are.
I want to hear them say it outloud.
I am in no mood to be polite and just “overlook” their “in your face” support of Obama.
My pick of the day quote has got to be:
“Be patient, we will flush all these terrorists out of the country.”
ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – Pakistani police hunted on Wednesday for gunmen who mounted the bold attack on Sri Lanka’s cricket team in Lahore and officials scrambled to figure out who was behind it.
The attack which killed eight people, six of them Pakistani police, plunged Pakistan into a “state of war,” Rehman Malik, the prime minister’s interior adviser, said.
“Be patient, we will flush all these terrorists out of the country,” he added.
Oops…forgot to add the really important comment.
U.S. President Barack Obama said he was “deeply concerned” about the attack.
I want to hear them say it outloud.
It’s always good to know what they are thinking. IF only to exploit the weaknesses in the process.
kali, I grew up in Southern California where “weather” is something you learned about in textbooks. Our typical elevator bonding experiences went something like this:
Me getting on elevator, recognizing co-worker: “Dude.”
Him: “Dude.”
Silence.
Me: “75 today.”
Him: “Nice.”
More silence.
Me: “Probably the same tomorrow.”
Him, laughing: “Whoa, Chatty Cathy!”
Me: “Sorry.”
Long silence. Doors open, I exit.
Me: “Later.”
Him: “Yo.”
Sadie offered this money quote:
>> U.S. President Barack Obama said he was “deeply concerned” about the attack.
God, that sticks in my craw. These are the times when I hate Obama, when I could literally vomit. I am referring to his complete lack of a spine. I am referring to his refusal to ever pass a moral judgment.
At least he said he was “deeply concerned” about the attack, and not “the situation in Pakistan”, in which the fact that someone wants to fight back wasn’t a part of what was deeply concerning to his jellyfish soul.
Ellen #6:
>> I’ll bet he is crying in his portfolio and blaming Bush.
Pretty much. My liberal family still thinks that Obama is doing the best he can, and those damned Republicans are trying to thwart him, and ruin it for all of us.
Sigh.
Just remember, at all times: We are not trying to convince liberals that they’re wrong. We’re trying to convince the 20% in the middle that those who drank the Obama Kool-Aid made a mistake. Forget the liberals – they’ll ALWAYS vote for the Democrats. The best we can hope for them, is that they’ll rediscover the relative merits of Truman and Kennedy… as compared to an Obama, a Reid, a Pelosi, that is.
MikeD – I am sadly convinced that many humans are simply hard-wired for a life of serfdom.
