Books with bad ideas

I threw a book away yesterday.  I mean, I really threw it away.  Into the garbage.  Shocked the heck out of my son, who has never seen me treat a book with disrespect.  “What was that book, Mommy?”  I answered, “It was called Book by a Complete Idiot.”

What it actually was was a thriller I bought for $3.00 a Goodwill, which opened with a “description” of the horrors Jews were visiting on poor Arabs during the 1948 war.  I know I should have stuck around to see whether the author was just repeating the thoughts of his Syrian character, but the way it was written didn’t imply that, and I didn’t have the stomach to find out.

I just learned about another book that would probably end up in the garbage, but I think, thank goodness, that my kids are already too old for it ever to end up in my house.
