Reaching the core conservative in all of us

Larry Elder’s article today is the perfect example of how to cut through labels and get people to examine the facts. The problem with American political discourse is they get liberal agenda items spoon-fed to them through our media, both news and entertainment. They then regurgitate the liberal party line without any understanding of the facts or the inexorable logic of those facts. Elder works through the facts with one person and, voila!, opens his eyes to a broader reality than that which the self-hating Jeanine Garofalo spouts.
What’s so interesting is that, once one manages to force people to look beyond their pre-manufactured prejudices, their core values are very often conservative or, at least, not Pelosi-liberal.

Excuse me for the diversion, but there isn’t an “Open Thread” convenient at the moment – and I thought this was something that needed to be passed on.

I don’t think Larry would mind. I’m surprised to see you featuring an article by him, Book. Was his show ever broadcast in the SF area?
Does anyone have any information why he left the airwaves? I hope it was for a good reason – not a bad reason. Though I do enjoy Mark Levine…!
I am just reaching out to the core conservative in all of us.
It’s a to do list for Earth Day. Yes, I know it’s a day or so late, but it’s a list and quite a clever and amusing one, too.

It’s probably been noted before on these boards: Robert Conquest nailed it when he said that most people are conservative when it comes to the things that they know best or love most.
Someone I know had an “aha moment” when her eminently qualified daughter was denied admission to her top college choices — a likely victim of reverse discrimination — and she, the mother, bitterly castigated the affirmative action that she had previously espoused in the abstract.
However, most limousine liberals cannot or will not see the cognitive dissonance of their positions. That’s why when it comes to its own business, all of a sudden the NYT wants to bust the unions.
The problem with liberals is twofold.
A) They think that they know better than others, in general. Call it the fallacy of misplaced authority, or whatever. It’s the hubris that because you got a 700 in your SATs, you can takeover and run the auto industry, despite no experience or expertise whatever. Combine that with a will-to-power and things get scary.
B) They think in terms of groups (stereotypes) rather than individuals, and do not respect the rights of the latter. Individuals cannot know what is best for themselves because they are merely products of their class/race/sex situation (i.e., not individuals at all). Any dissent from that party line is false consciousness because it deviates from that structural determinism.
The whole thing comes down to a denial of free will.
My tomatoes are in the ground, and the zucchinis, watermelons, cantaloupes and pumpkins go in this weekend. (I have a patch of ground that really needs some green camouflage).
I like the list…!
Oh yeah…and Swiss Chard. Gotta get that in too…!
Should do beans, but there are weeds in the way. Maybe next weekend.
I’ve been looking for some Scarlet Runner Beans…beauty plus good eating. Can’t seem to find them at the usual seed sources…
You’ll find what you need here suek.

That’s the one thing I’ve noticed that is consistent among the Statists, gpc: They are in favor of darn near everything in the abstract… but when it hits them where they hurt, they are usually outraged.
What this means in the concrete, is that as long as it affects someone else – like the rich! – they are for it. When it affects them, they’re against it. It’s just another flavor of the NIMBY – not in my backyard – phenomenon. “I’m in favor of it, of course! Just not in my neighborhood.”
Think Ted Kennedy and Wind Power. He’s all for it, except when the windmills ruin the view from his beach.
Thank you Sadie…bookmarked!
I get all sorts of catalogs for some reason. I’ve ordered from Park Seeds, and I expect their catalog, but somehow I’ve gotten on a list that sends me catalogs from Illinois. In fact, I thought the three I got this year were all from the same company – they had the same promo photos – but when I checked, the names and addresses were different…but all from the same town in Ill. Odd.
I try to limit my Park Seed buying to every other year…their photos are so terrific and their seeds are pretty expensive…I tend to get carried away. And really – some of the 6 packs are so inexpensive that it doesn’t make sense to start your own from seed unless you’re doing the heirloom plants. I just do Early Girls, and this year, I ended up with doubles, so I have six plants in the ground and another six still in the packs.
I went to a Giants ball game yesterday with my ultra-liberal psychologist friend. (As long as we don’t talk politics—and I’ve trained him to back off—we have a great time just pal-ling around.)
Anyway, the big scoreboard was showing a highlight reel where Bay Area resident Chesly Sullenberger, the hero pilot who landed his crippled jet in the Hudson River, threw out the first ball of the young season.
As my friend and I were praising Sullenberger, he said, “I know I’m supposed to a liberal and not be impressed at disciplined military types who do their jobs well, but that guy really impressed me.” Then he added, “I felt the same way when the sharpshooters zapped those Somali pirates.”
I simply said that we all know deep down that there is a time for competent and brave men to do the right thing, and that we know what that right thing is.
He didn’t disagree. Thus, one more rust-inducing thought insinuated itself into his mental armor.
Oh, how I yearn for a real garden. High rise living precludes such thoughts. I am reduced to large pots (lots of them) and have all ready planted Cherry red and Roma Grape tomatoes and …drum roll, this year Brussel Sprouts. The balcony is very large and long 40′? so there’s lots more room and hopefully a sunny season ahead. Although I have to be careful what plants I keep outside, since birds like to nest high and oh yes…they have and did in a lovely Christmas Cactus plant one year.
I will buy some herb plants for the balance of the pots, no rush since I am in Pa. I get so excited once the weather changes that I find myself wandering in and out of all garden centers and forget that I have to water all of these plants daily eventually.
I lost one season planting in 2007 (broken ankle in April) and it took close to 9 months to walk without assistance of a cane or walker and I’ve been trying like hell to make up for it since last year.

Give a hand..take an arm.
This is the result when one tires to deny or deal with extremists.
The goal and the means to an end are not to be overlooked, denied, belittled nor should anyone in the West delude themselves otherwise.
It’s time to zap.
Maybe our ultra-liberal friends should adjust their thinking and see them as pirates.
Sadie,
It is worse than you know.

Found this through a commenter at Hot Air.

Thanks for the map. I normally like show n’ tell. Now it’s show n’ shriek!
I understand the Taliban Pirates (still trying to make it more palatable for friends of Charles and my own) are 60 miles from Islamabad.
No doubt the UN is in closed door meetings at this very moment, issuing a condemnation. More likely, they’re hootin’ and a hollerin’ giving one another high fives, knuckle bumps and some good old back slapping joys of glee.
The open question is how long do ‘we’ wait.
To quote Charles – “I simply said that we all know deep down that there is a time for competent and brave men to do the right thing, and that we know what that right thing is”.
A quote to go with the 60 miles away from Islamabad.
I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.
Albert Einstein
Never forget that there are powerful elements within the Pakistani Intelligence Service that are complete allies to the Taliban jihadists in Pakistan. They are in league and working together.
Diplomat of any country: “We simply cannot allow the jihadists to assume control of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons.”
USA General: “What do you suggest we do?”
Diplomat: “Anything! We have to do something!”
USA General: “OK. We’ll send our forces in and secure them in six hours. We have a plan.”
Diplomat: “Oh no! You can’t do that! It’s against UN conventions. Simply impossible.”
USA General: “Then what do you suggest?”
Diplomat: “But you have to do something!”
And so it goes.
(Mike, as usual, just spot on.)
Could Pakistan be nancy boy Obama’s first real foreign policy outing?
After all, he was the one who clamored to have U.S. forces invade Pakistan to throttle the Taliban, and it looks as though those murderous, emaciated chickens are coming home to roost.
Hopey’s ace in the hole might be India, which is not about to put up with a bunch of Muslim savages rattling nuclear sabers. He can also hope that sane men in the Pakistani armed forces are even now dismantling or disabling any nukes they have access to.
But at some point, the Ball-less One is going to be called upon to make a manly decision. If so much weren’t at stake, I’d be laughing my ignorant/sexist/homophobic/Christianist/greedhead/white supremacist arse off at the prospect of watching the farce of an effete narcissist trying to figure out how to be bad.
“murderous, emaciated chickens….” I love that kind of writing, Charles.

Just a couple of reminders of how far the journey to badness is going to be for our Great Leader.

That third picture of Obama hanging curtains has got to have even the grumpy mullahs of Iran, who have outlawed mirth, laughing their butts off.
Like I said in post #13, I like show n’ tell.
And it’s quite a tell, to put it in poker terms, that the office has come a long way from bringing down the Iron Curtain to hanging the blue one (I think it’s called burka blue in some parts of the world).
