Gerry Charlotte Phelps articulates something I’ve been thinking about for a while, which is that Americans might have been weakened by the incredible plenty in their lives, and that we all might benefit from having a little less. (Although it would hurt me to give up my iPhone, that’s for sure.)

I have to make this short.

It is not so much plenty that corrupts, as it is a lack of internal tension, challenge, and standards. Humanity was designed, by whatever entity or power you subscribe to, to meet challenges and to either overcome them or be overcome by them.

To do otherwise, to live free of the risk of being threatened or destroyed by insurmountable challenges, would mean that people are stuck in a sort of Limbo. They are neither one nor the other, neither Fish nor Fowl.

It is this internal tension that exists in all human beings, even though we may express it according to our particular personalities and individual preferences. Some prefer to excel at art, others at academic study of abstract ideas or less definitive and concrete histories. Still others prefer to excel at killing, the study of warfare, or socio-economic balances.

Character, thus, is no more than a pseudo-name. What it really is is the state of your internal affairs. What's inside your soul and mind, and not simply inside you body or outside of your body. How are you functioning? Is there strength in your core? Where has this strength come from? Just as one may take care of or abuse one's health and body, so is the same for the internal integrity, fortitude, and strength of a human being.

A strong person becomes stronger by using his or her muscles. A person of internal fortitude, character, and integrity gets those things by doing those things. And the greater the odds, the greater the sacrifice, the faster they improve. Or the faster they are defeated and broken, or killed. (As we can see in Iran)

Ipods or Iphones and other such physical accessories are external to this internal power source.
