What’s really fascinating is that Terresa has commenters as wonderful (and informed) as mine. One of them left this message:
For those of us who survived Civics and U.S. History in elementary and high school, here’s a pertinent and relevant quote for you:

It’s from the Declaration of Independence! As you know, the bulk of that document is concerned with detailing the grievances against George III that justify the colonist’s exercise of their right to abolish a government that imposes burdens without benefits on its citizens:
The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.
He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
