And, of course, we chose the eagle as our standard. Which makes it not so much an eagle, as a phoenix. The proof of the resurrection of the Roman Republic, before it was destroyed by the <B>Senate class</b>

The King could listen to the jester because he was harmless and did not impact the King's Dignitas. Lesse Majesty, after all, was a capital offense.

Since power comes from the King, as he is the Absolute Monarch appointed by God with the seal of the Church, anything you say that decreases his authority in his own eyes or anybody else's eyes (especially his court of nobles) is easily termed treason.

A jester, because he can be considered harmless, crazy, or meaningless, could say things which could contradict the King's position (we would call it disagreement) and not be executed for Lese Majesty. So long as the King doesn't feel offended or one of his nobles doesn't urge the matter. Cause the jester will die if either King or Noble believes it is useful to do so.

The wikipedia for Lese Majesty says it actually originated in the Old Roman Republic. Interesting, that. The Europeans got Lese Majesty from it, and thus created WWI and WWII and the works of Marx, the overthrow of the Tsar, and the Bolshevik Rise to power.

America's Founding Fathers, instead, chose the Roman Senate to adopt instead. Funny how that works.

suek, here's a quote that somewhat answers your question:

<blockquote>"In societies where the Freedom of Speech was not recognized as a right, the court jester - precisely because anything he said was by definition "a jest" and "the uttering of a fool" - could speak frankly on controversial issues in a way in which anyone else would have been severely punished for, and monarchs understood the usefulness of having such a person at their side. Still, even the jester was not entirely immune from punishment, and he needed to walk a thin line and exercise careful judgment in how far he might go - which required him to be far from a "fool" in the modern sense."</blockquote>
