Patrick Swayze — R.I.P.

In the 1980s, I was quite the Patrick Swayze fan, admiring his looks, his physique, and his adequate acting chops. Although I outgrew that youthful infatuation, in the last few years I’ve become an even bigger fan, since I admired his valiant fight against cancer. Sadly, the cancer finally won: Patrick Swayze passed away today, aged 57.

Patrick Swayze was a class act.
He didn’t blame anyone else nor cry “woe is me.” He admitted that his own behaviour (heavy drinking and smoking) may have led to his illness. He put on a brave face and fought well.
He married young and stayed married to his wife for his entire life; how many others in Hollywood (or elsewhere for that matter, nowadays) do that?
May he rest in peace and may his wife be comforted in the days ahead.
I loved “Road House,” one of the great B flicks of the 1980s. I’ll miss him, too. RIP.
As someone involved with Hollywood, I can tell you the inside story is: there is no inside story. A genuine Good Guy. A delight. Honest, honorable, a very nice man – as classy as they come.
Like Fred Astaire: he did his work and went home. “You have this much of me, world – no more.” You never heard him spouting political opinions, you never read about him punching someone off a bar-stool, and you never saw the cops leading him away.
He is already hugely missed, and will be more so.
