True SJBill. She was based in Mayport at the time and I was based at NAS Jax. I was in an AD (which I will never really think of as the A-1) squadron at the time.

Another bit of lore. We made a port visit to Beiruit in 1959. What a city it was then.

Anyway, that was a year after Ike had sent the Marines into Lebanon to save the government. Essex had been part of the supporting Naval force and the Lebanese were aware of it. They swamped the ship with visitors and adulation. There was no question as to how they felt about Americans at that time.

You must have been homeported in Mayport, just before her move to Quonset Point. I was a VS Airdale with ship’s company, 66 – 68.
