Sometimes fashion really is art

It’s a joke to call Alexander McQueen’s work fashion, because these clothes were never meant to be worn by real people, even fashionable real people.  However, there’s a bizarre beauty to the images he was able to create with fantasy clothes, leggy models, peculiar hairstyles, shaved eyebrows, and twelve inch high platform shoes.  The only thing I wonder about is the eyebrows.  Lucille Ball always claimed that having to shave her eyebrows for 30s style fashion shoots somehow damaged them to the point that they never grew in again.

    Greetings:

I served my high school sentence back in the early ’60s when “Beetle Boots” with their Cuban heels and pointy toes were popular with the guys. Not so much with my high school basketball coach whose advice was, “If you don’t buy shoes that look like your feet, you’ll soon have feet that look like your shoes.”

I stopped wearing high heels when I was a young attorney. One day, I toddled into court wearing my high heels and fashionably tight skirt. I could barely walk in a straight line. (Although I must admit that I looked smashing.)

Opposing counsel, a man, came striding in attired, as one would expect, in pants and flat shoes. He looked purposeful and comfortable. I decided that was the way to go.

Since then, with almost no exceptions (to my daughter’s great chagrin), I wear pants and comfortable shoes. I’ve only got one pair of feet and one spine to take me through this life, and I’m not messing with either of them.

    Words to walk through life.

Book: Your daughter’s comments made me laugh. Friends used to accuse me of wearing ‘old ladies shoes’ when we were young/er. Now, they all wear comfortable shoes out of necessity.
