He was supposedly affected by the stories of the horror of war. This was coupled with his unwillingness to go to Iraq. There has been a casual correlation maintained between these two elements. Whether he went to Iraq or not, he was not going to be given a gun. He was still going to work as a therapist treating soldiers affected by the events of war. He would merely have been plying his trade closer to the source of the traumas. This is more likely the result of an internal conflict between his identification as an offended Muslim. Even though he was born in the US, he claimed himself to be a Palestinean. That is significant. The stories of the horrors our soldiers were dealing with became stories of the horror (in Hasan's mind) of the muslim. This was his twisted personal jihad. Which makes the point that we need to do a better job vetting those who would serve in the military. If they are asked to perform a duty that conflicts with their religion, where will their allegience lie, with their religion or their country?
