I really do stand by my first reading of the movie, which was based solely on what I saw in that film.

The thing is, Earl, Hollywood is an illusion. It's not true. What is true is what is made from your own two hands. So while you can see a reflection of the truth in Hollywood, you must never forget that Hollywood is made up out of lies, distortions, untruths, and illusions. The only reality is what you yourself hold in your hands, which includes what all of us can do as well.

The same would be true of spirituality. Just as nobody can else can confer spiritual connection to God or salvation of Grace, except the ONe source. You have to get to the one source, and not the idols.

But you are apparently woefully ignorant about neurotic, demanding, selfish women

You, being in Marin, and part of the lawyer community, must be very familiar with such ; )

Earl: I love your vision of what constitutes a good marriage, and I truly wish Hollywood would recognize its existence. But you are apparently woefully ignorant about neurotic, demanding, selfish women, which is why you didn't pick up on what I saw in the movie. Which just goes to show that you are a very lucky man, with a lovely wife.

Well, that's......disappointing.
And disgusting, of course.
I really do stand by my first reading of the movie, which was based solely on what I saw in that film. There's plenty of room for other points of view, naturally....and I suppose that my reading was somewhat optimistic and based on personal experience.....
What the bits of information you've given us have done is make it absolutely certain that I shan't be seeing Julie and Julia again. (retch)
Makes me very grateful for the (imperfect, growing, permanent, and loving) marriage that I've got.

I agree with you, Bookworm. What I disliked about Julie and Julia was her narcissism and this new book reveals more of it.
jjteam - I think it was Bookworm who had linked a story years ago about how one school showed old movies to show how manners had changed. Unexpectedly, the children cried after seeing these films. They cried that no one loved them enough to teach them good manners. Sad to say, but someone may also need to teach what it is to be a good person.

Am I the only one out here who is regularly appalled by formerly sane persons' code of conduct anymore? Here you have this gal Julie who is abundantly blessed with commercial success in a tightly-controlled (hard to get into) forum like Publishing - and instead of using her success to cement her relationship and future - she blows it all up. Why? Where is this woman's dignity and commonsense?
The butchery sounds creepy. The affair sounds creepier. Those little snippets about her wildness and fierceness and emancipation sound...bogus. What a farce. Seems to me like that systemic narcissism the Famed Ones have is more or less terminal to any sort of happiness. I say UGH to the whole story. JessM
