It's funny that you say that, Mike, about the reflexive need nowadays to denigrate the good. History is full of revisionism. Americans evil, dictators good. Washington and Jefferson are evil slave owners; the slave dealers in Africa were entrepreneurs trying to balance their needs against the evil white man's. The Indians, rather than being people with the usual mix of good and evil, were plaster stains; while the Europeans who came over were, without exception, genocidal maniacs.

Of course, this isn't new. Shakespeare was a master at uplifting and destroying old reputations to suit current political needs. He just did it with more elan than the modern crowd.

Start with a beloved classic, with archetypical characters who are clearly good and clearly evil. The good are virtuous, and the evil are nefarious. Good triumphs; evil gets its just rewards.

Now seize that moral classic and completely pervert everything about it. And there you have Wicked, or the Jim Carrey Grinch movie. It's an assault even upon the idea that we know what good and evil are, that we can recognize them. The goal is to leave you adrift, impressionable, vulnerable, and programmable; incapable of moral judgment.

I would have made the Wicked Witch of the West into a republican, and the do gooder Goody Witch into the good for nothing fake liberal arrogant elitist.

Imagine the fun I could have with that, juxtaposed against a corrupt Obama Wizard and Emanuel apprentice?

Excellent review, Book! I saw the same touring company (I believe) in Seattle in October.
But I would add: "Thematic content: morally postmodern and relativistic"
