Great analysis and comment. Post Civil-War liberals were really closet racists. They were willing to free the slaves but keep them down where where they were. In the 60′s, a paper describing the effect of emancipation on this country got me a honorary day off until I repented. Lincolnwas right on the mark, and like so many libs then and today, they didn’t want to complete or “enforce” the assimilation. Lincoln’s plan should have included the embracing of education, work and “american way” training for a population that had been not participating in the work-reward system we ascribed to in this country. The results are that you shift an unemployed mass to a different support mechanism. Trading laterally for the feds from the farms. This was duplicated with the Cherokee and somehow corrected with the Euro and Asia immigrants. The US “story” as applied to this later group is a success or role model of work and acheivement. If we continue to lay deep in the puddle of ”liberal guilt” we will continue to frustrate our citizens of any neck color. Let’s reward the work done not reward or PRIZE the wishes. By the way films like GROUNDHOG DAY and LEGALLY BLONDE, although initally poo-poo’ed are now standards of the encouragement industry as a way of working and taking care of friends and family by commitment and effort. Although they are “snow-white” is racial content, both offer a model attitude of working to get what you want.

One key barrier is that they associate Conservatism with selfishness and badness (see statements in the media and by members of Congress). We need to help these folks see that these beliefs are false and even bigoted of them.

First they have to do something about their ideas of violence.

In response to your comment Bookworm- people who are Conservative in values though knee-jerk politically can be influenced by Conservative thinking. I know people like this. They live in a state of cognitive dissonance. But I understand them. For years I was the same. Conversations with smart Conservatives, books, talk radio and other factors were factors that gradually helped me to change. One key barrier is that they associate Conservatism with selfishness and badness (see statements in the media and by members of Congress). We need to help these folks see that these beliefs are false and even bigoted of them.
