They once were lost, and now they’re found!

I am so happy to report that Ryan Barrett and Viola Liu have been found.  They had indeed been stranded in the snow, but they were able to find shelter for several days.  When the weather cleared, they hiked out and were spotted by a rescue helicopter.  Needless to say, the family is ecstatic.  Thanks to every one of you who helped spread the word about this missing couple.  It’s so uplifting when “lost” stories like this have a happy ending.

Here’s the news report:

A Fremont couple who hadn’t been heard from since last weekend after leaving for a camping trip were found safe Saturday in rural Lake County.

A helicopter pilot hired by the family of Ryan Barrett saw the 31-year-old and his girlfriend Viola Liu, 31, walking near Elk Mountain Road north of Clear Lake around 3:30 p.m., said Barrett’s aunt, Patricia Jennings.

The helicopter, with Barrett’s uncle and cousin inside acting as spotters, evacuated them. They were headed home Saturday evening.

“They’re fine,” Jennings said. “They’re tired and hungry and thirsty, but fine. And so are their dogs,” she said, referring to the three dogs that accompanied the couple on their trip.

The couple left for Lake County on Jan. 16, intending to stay two nights. But Jennings said they got trapped when rain and snow hit the region and their two-wheel-drive vehicle couldn’t traverse the streams they crossed on the way there.

The couple happened upon a cabin, where they stayed a couple of nights, Jennings said. They survived on the provisions they had brought, including freeze-dried food.

On Saturday morning they set out to try to hike to civilization and were spotted by the helicopter, Jennings said.

Whew!  Very glad to hear it.  I read that their last known location was Upper Lake, and I flashed back on my last time there: attempting to go over Elk Mountain road to camp at Bear Creek.  My old pickup truck with 11′ camper was no match for that steep and windy road, and the carburetor boiled over, forcing a grumbling retreat.  I thought of them out on that road in that storm we had… a truck could go over the edge and not be found for a loong time.  I am relieved all are found ok.  And now they have an awesome camping story!  :)

Sounds like they were well-prepared, which is a blessing.
There is a lot of VERY rough country north of Clear Lake, and as David2527 indicates, you could disappear out there and not be found for a LONG time……

In a few days the family needs to give them a sound thrashing with a wet noodle.

    The prodigal… couple?

I agree with Bill…they weren’t thinking situationally when they planned the trip. First rule of thumb, check the weather reports.  I am so pleased that they didn’t have to eat their dogs.

So that’s why people take their pets camping with them!

    Excerpted from the AP Story:
The couple later returned to the cabin where they had holed up, and began unpacking the Suburban, which was  still mired next to the campfire,  axle deep in the mud.  ”We used the SUV as a windbreak when we sat here cooking the meals,” said Ryan, kicking aside the empty five gallon container of Wesson.   “We were mostly worried about the mudslides”, he continued, as he opened the hatchback, stopping to frolic with the couple’s three beloved dogs.  But of their beloved chicken, Louise, there was no sign.

Good news!!  And glad to hear it…

Bet they’re married or broken up by June!  That kind of an episode is likely to either cement the relationship, or inform them that it has no future…

I read that “with their wet poodle“.

Glad to see they didn’t panic and are home safe.

    Mike…
#7 might be what it comes down to, but I’d bet that in the weather they were having, it was more like “Three Dog Night”….in other words…better than heating pads, and no electricity needed!
