If you want to look back even further, check William James and Thomas Dewey (author of the present un-Godly mess in our public schools. One of the best  guys for a really intense history lesson about the whole "rigts" mentality can be found in Natural Rights and The Right to Choose - he addresses abortion specifically but since the gay rigts activists have framed their argument as one of civil rights, best go to the whole genesis of the concept of rights.   To Americans, the right to life , liberty, and the pursuit of happiness aren't up for a vote - they're granted by our Creator. Take Judeo-Christianity out and any right is up for a vote.
