Just because music — Billy Squier

I’ve always enjoyed “Rock Me Tonite,” which is a great, hard-driving rock song. It’s incredibly funny, therefore, to watch Billy Squier do a low grade, and quite feminine, Jennifer Beals imitation in the accompanying video:
Rumor has it that this pastel-toned ballet killed his career. I wouldn’t be at all surprised….

Don’t know if it was the video itself, or the eventually-confirmed rumors that he is gay. But when his hard-rocking teenage male fans found out that “Stroke Me, Stroke Me” wasn’t about what they THOUGHT it was about, the “eewww, yuck” factor creeps in.
Rob Halford and Judas Priest faced the same problem when he admitted he was gay. He made it into a big problem when he admitted he was pulling one on his teenage hard-rock fans, too, saying “What you thought I was singing about in “Living After Midnight”… was not what you thought I was singing about.
Again, all those fans take another look at those lyrics they used to love and all they can say as a response is, “Ewww, yuck.” Instead of claiming to fool your fans, perhaps a rock star who decides to come out, should just say something like “Some things are universal, and hard rock is hard rock and it’s one of em.” And leave it at that, idiots. These rock stars ruin themselves.
“I took the city ’bout one A.M, loaded, loaded
I’m all geared up to score again, loaded, loaded
I come alive in the neon light
That’s when I make my moves right
Living after midnight, rockin’ to the dawn
Lovin’ ’til the morning, then I’m gone, I’m gone”
What’s a teenage male fan to think? Ewww, Yuck. ”Loaded? Loaded? Lovin til the morning?” Ick. I’m outta here.
This song brings back memories of 26 years ago….starting high school and all that fun stuff with it.
