Join the Navy!

I’ll write more about this later, but I wanted to say that one of the delightful Chiefs we met last night was inspired to join the Navy because of Hollywood movies made when Hollywood still liked the military.
That inspired me to go hunting in the archives and to find this song from a 1955 movie, Hit the Deck. Try to imagine a Hollywood movie nowadays urging it’s viewers to “Join the Navy, Join the US Navy, It’s a great life to be a gob….”
Incidentally, if you’re situated as I am, and there is no possibility that you will ever join the Navy, think about joining the Navy League, thereby supporting the Navy.

I spent 10 years in the Navy in the enlisted ranks. That was during the Reagan years. Life was good. I got out just before Clinton took office. My guess is that we are near the same age Book.
Book, if you haven’t already read it I recommend Herman Wouk’s novel “The Caine Mutiny.” The film is good, but is no substitute for the book.
About a year ago I read something by some leftist who was crediting (although he considered it discrediting) Wouk as the real founder of neoconservatism.
Thanks for posting this, what fun. I joined the Navy Reserves in 2001 after 9-11. The only service that would take a 37 year old professional. I just finished my CPO induction 4 weeks ago now and am headed into the next fiscal year as a Chief and plan on sticking it out as long as the body does.
Glad you enjoyed fleet week, I spent 6 months on the USS Enterprise in 07> I wrote a blog about it while I was on board. http://robert-ball.blogspot.com
